    Yuletide Madness!
    So, Yuletide Madness is open!

I actually managed to write a little something for someone. It's so painfully obvious that I feel like offering ficlets or something to people who CAN'T figure out what I wrote. :)

I thought about doing something else, but it's 5am, so maybe tomorrow if we don't have too much running around to do.

primary MD, GI specialist and ob/gyn all called me in this week. It is looking like it may be just the usual stomach problems x 100. I am scheduled for the ultrasound by the ob/gyn after the New Year and if the new medication doesn't  resolve my inability to eat within a week, I'll be going in for an endoscopy as well. I've lost another 2 lbs in the past week. I am getting enough fluid and drinking gatorade but it is hard to get food inside of you when you're stomach feels like it has a softball lodged in it.

on the good news I got my swine fly shot yesterday. so yeah!  I'll be off to rest in bed.

of course my mother picks this week to finally go see her pulmonary specialist for a follow-up - she's having problems breathing and we've been pushing her for the past year to get it looked at. she wants me to come with her. half the time she lies to her doctors (and me) or minimizes her problems so I have no idea what has been discussed. If I am able I will go however, because it does help to have another person in the room when talking with doctors. but as I keep reminding my family: she's an adult.  and an idiot. adults are allowed to be idiots. I think it is in the Constitution or something.

I remembered to write down things when I thought of them!

    1. Even though Carla and I have been the ones living in this house for eleven years and I have been paying the gas, electric, and water bills that whole time, they've still been in my mom's name because it's a pain in the ass to change. But we have found that some places will not accept anything other than utility bills as proof of residency, so that finally gave me incentive to ask my mom to change them. Though as it turns out, she was only able to change the electricity bill. For the gas, she had to call and stop service and then I had to call and set up a new account. Ridiculous. Also cost $25 to do so (and the electricity cost $15 to change, but both of those she said we could take off the rent). The water, they said I had to go down there in person with six cancelled checks showing I had been paying it. And of course the bank doesn't send back cancelled checks anymore. They don't even send copies of cancelled checks the way they were for a while. So next time we go to the bank, I'll ask what needs to be done to get copies of cancelled checks, and if it's not too big a hassle or cost, I'll get them and go down and change the water bill. But it's not a priority since we do now have the other two in my name. So yay for that.

    2. Speaking of bills. A couple months ago we got a notice from Verizon that our internet bill would be going up by $5 a month. That sucks, but at least they weren't just upping the price for nothing. They were also going to be giving us faster upload and download speeds. (If they'd given us a choice, I would not have paid to upgrade as our FiOS is plenty fast, but if they're going to jack up the cost, I'm at least glad we're getting higher speeds in return.) It didn't say when that would kick in, though, so I hadn't really been thinking about it. But then the other day we noticed it was really fast!

    3. We had sloppy joes for dinner. Mmm...sloppy joes. I love them so.

    Greetings from...here!
Well, we're in VA* now. We got in just fine after just missing what's being called the Blizzard of 09. There's snow everywhere and it's very pretty. And cold. Really fucking cold. In spite of that, we had the window open for a while last night, Nancy's cousin keeps the house pretty warm and between the forced air heat and a massive hot flash, I was burning up.

I've actually been writing, mostly poking at "A Friend of the Devil."

Not much else to say. Hope all of you are doing well!

*Near DC. And while I would have loved to arrange some kind of meet up with those of you on my flist who live in the area, for a lot of complicated reasons, it's really not possible this time around.

    1. We got our money back from the bank from the fraudulent charge! The other day we walked by our bank and saw they got bought out by another bank. O_o So I was kind of worried about the timing. Maybe our claim would get lost in the shuffle or something. But no, everything worked out okay. Yay!

    2. They had Peanut Butter Twix at the 99 Cent Store last night, two for $1. I love them so.

Aaand once again I forgot a bunch of things I was going to post. ;_; I really need to start writing these down beforehand!

A Can of Happiness by Kawahara Kazune

    Title: A Can of Happiness
Original Title: 幸せのかんづめ (Shiawase no Kanzume)
    Author: Kawahara Kazune
    Publisher: Margaret Comics
    Genre: Shoujo
Status in Japan: 1 volume, complete
Scanlator: Occasional Amateur Scanlations & Megchan's Scanlations
    Scanlation Status: Ongoing

Emi wins the special prize in a raffle, which turns out to be a can that supposedly holds happiness. There's even a weird little man who starts following her around, claiming he's the "god of the can" and trying to give her advice. But all she wants is for her relationship with her boyfriend to feel less like a one-sided crush. Will this can really help her be happy?

Includes four other short stories: Boys Just Don't Understand, A Million Words, The Opposite of Love Is Hate, and I'll Always Be Here.

Story 1: A Can of Happiness

I've been working with Occasional Amateur Scanlations to translate some older anthologies by Kawahara Kazune (author of Sensei! and High School Debut). This is the first story in an anthology by the same name. The other four stories in the anthology will follow whenever we get them done.

    1. I forgot to mention in yesterday's post, but yesterday when we were out for our walk, we found four dollars! It was very exciting. Today we found no dollars. :( And, in fact, we stopped at the store on our walk and bought some oranges and a Tootie Roll and now have less dollars than before. But I'm still pretty excited about finding those four dollars. :D

    2. We got a package today with our presents from Carla's aunt and uncle. Mine is a suspiciously video-game-shaped package. :D :D :D I had several games (mostly Lego-based) on my wishlist, so I don't know which one it is! I do know it's either Wii or PS2, though, not DS.

    3. Despite a little reading slowdown late last month/early this month, I am still on target to meet my goal of 75 books by the end of the year! I just posted the 70th review, but I have actually read 71. I'm just saving that one (The Birchbark House by Louise Erdrich) to post together with its sequels. I also have two other books in progress (Unseen Academicals and a Shaman King novel) which will be the final two.

    4. Yesterday on Regretsy there was a post about someone selling their bad, bad photoshop skills. They claim to be a professional and a lot of people in comments are skeptical, but having seen professional photoshop work, I totally believe it.

Anyway, so then earlier today there was a challenge to create manips and now all the most recent posts are filled with manips.

My favorites are the Twilight ones and pretty much anything that includes references to the "say what" guy (especially the one with the squirrel eating the cat). (If you're not a regular reader of Regretsy, some of these are probably not as funny since they're based on Regretsy in-jokes and/or stuff previously features on the site.)

    Oh fun....
I'm not going to go into all the icky details, but the 24 hours before this trip have been...well kinda crappy. But! We're packed and ready to go and apparently, there will be a runway for our plane to land on once we hit the Right Coast.

We're not entirely sure what our internets access will be like for the first part of the trip so I might be even worse about answering comments than I usually am.

Because I won't be here on the 21st...

Blessed Yule to all of you!

Book 70: Keeping You a Secret by Julie Anne Peters
    Title: Keeping You a Secret
    Author: Julie Anne Peters
    Number of Pages: 250 pages
    Book Number/Goal: 70/75 for 2009
    My Rating: 5/5

Holland is the student body president, on the swim team, a straight-A student, and has a great boyfriend who's also one of her best friends. Everyone thinks her life is perfect. But when she falls in love with Cece, a new girl at school, that all starts to change.

I read another book by Peters earlier this year and liked it a lot, so I was hoping this would be as good and it definitely was. It felt a little less textbooky than Luna, which I think has to do with the fact that the author is writing from personal experience here, where she wasn't with Luna. There's a subplot in this with Holland's stepsister Faith, who's a goth, and that part has the same "let me show you my research" feel to it that all the transgender stuff in Luna did.

    stuff and things and gifts!
    [comments enabled all over]

First off, I want to say "thank you!" to whoever sent me the Hungry Lucy CD. :) I'mma make sure to load it onto my Nano for the trip!

Secondly...OMG, you should see the scarf I got from [personal profile] wyomingnot it's all fuzzy and purpley and glittery and fun!

Thirdly, while we made cookies the other night, we opened presents because we're not taking gifts for each other on the trip. I got some chocolate (including a Vosages bacon bar that I haven't tried yet), a tie-dyed shirt, a pair of fleece arm warmers with gears and hearts silk screened on them, a very cool steampunky wire-wrapped key necklace, a bead necklace and a ginormous book about food. It's a collection of essays on food and taste in history and it's a a lot bigger than I expected and heavy; I won't be taking it on the flight.

    And that's about it.

Thank you again Wyo and mysterious CD giving person!

    1. After massive procrastinating ([personal profile] anatsuno can attest to the fact that I was like a little kid trying to prolong bedtime), I finally got started on my Yuletide fic! I got 200 words written, which for me is a good chunk in one sitting.

I finally figured out when I wanted to set the fic, which is what I think was holding me back the most before. I had ideas of what I wanted to do, but it was all vague. I needed the setting and I finally got that now, so the writing was coming pretty easily. (And I'm pleased with what I've got so far.)

Not sure how long this one will end up being. Probably longer than the minimum of 1000 words, but I doubt it'll be too long. I'm really excited about it, though, and I really hope my recipient will be as well.

    2. We walked up to the library yesterday afternoon and I finally got my hands on Unseen Academicals, the newest Discworld book. Woohoo!

    3. We got a box of Christmas cookies in the mail yesterday from Carla's mom. There was also a bunch of caramel corn (mixed with stuff like nuts and chocolate-covered pretzels and M&Ms) which is all for me, since Carla isn't a huge fan. It's slightly stale as it was sent in a plain cardboard box, not a tupperware or ziploc bag or anything, but still, caramel corn om nom nom. My favorite!

    4. I finally got a real copy of Photoshop installed. I've been using this portable version for over a year since I got this laptop and could no longer use my ancient non-Vista-compatible version that I'd been using for years. The portable one wasn't really very compatible, either, frankly. I'd always had a lot of glitchiness with it, but every time I tried to install a cracked version, it wouldn't work. (I tried one again last night and did everything the instructions said, but then it asked me to insert a CD, which of course I didn't have. WTF?) But lately it's deteriorated from "annoyingly glitchy" to "actually unusable", but I was finally able to find a good version that actually installed as it said it would, yay. AND! This not being the crap portable version, I can finally have all my old brushes back!

    5. Good news for Carla!

    Hey look! It's a squirrel!
I feel like I am cautiously able to poke my head up and look around again.

    1. We're waiting for the dishwasher parts at which point we will try to repair the dishwasher once again. After that it is curtains for the machine.
    2. I am eating a bit more but only with the help of medication. I plan to go back to the MD after the holiday and ask for the ovarian cancer screening. It is most likely the EDS (connective tissue disorder) that is causing the problems but the symptoms are lasting longer than ever and even the medications are not restoring me like they used to. Once the BigC is ruled out I feel I'll have the luxury to fiddle with the other more likely-but-not-likely-to-kill-you tests/possibilities. The tests are fairly cheap and non-invasive a(at least until they find something odd) and together can catch up to 80% of the cancer.  Earlier detection vastly increases your odds. So if you find yourself :
    • Abdominal pressure, fullness, swelling or bloating (me)
    • Urinary urgency
    • Pelvic discomfort or pain
    • Persistent indigestion, gas or nausea (me)
    • Unexplained changes in bowel habits, such as constipation (me)
that is persistent (more than 3 weeks) and not going away. Get tested.

    3. Had a lovely chat with a friend that cheered me up.
    4. Was deeply amused by this fanzine listing: Flying Nun fanzines. oh my!
    5. I too have Livejournal membership discount coupons to give away - if anyone is planning on becoming a paid member, the coupon will give you $10/off a yearly subscription. Just drop a comment below. I think you need to be on my reading list.
    6. xlorp begins his 2 week (unpaid) time off next week. I'd rather have more time with him than the money so it is all good.

    1. I was productive yesterday! Got all my Jump stuff done (and I'm doing One Piece, Bleach, Naruto, Psyren, and Bakuman now, so that's quite a bit of productivity just by itself!), plus a chapter of All Rounder Meguru for Kotonoha, as well as a couple pages of an SPN fic I'm translating for [livejournal.com profile] daemonicangel (omg it's taken me so long, but I'm determined to have it done by Christmas). I also got six pages of chapter 39 of IS translated.

    2. Had our yoga final last night. There was a practical part as well as written, and they were both pretty easy. The first was just going through all the asanas we'd learned, and the written was the same as our previous quizzes. I did enjoy the class, but I'm glad it's over (especially all the papers we had to write...ugh! I was horrible at writing papers when I was in school and that hasn't changed a bit).

    3. I feel good about the decision to stop scanlating Saint Young Men. I mean, I still feel bad about letting people down, but my mind's a lot lighter already, and I'm actually looking forward to doing the last two chapters in volume one. And hopefully without that dragging me down, I'll be a lot quicker about getting chapters of other stuff out.

    4. I think I finally have a handle on my Yuletide fic. I have known ever since I got my assignment what I was going to write. Sort of. I just wasn't sure how to do it. But last night I think I figured it out and unfortunately I didn't have a chance to get started writing it with all the translations I had to do, but that is my number one priority for today. Not only do I not want to be running up against the deadline (Monday!), but I would really like to get it done before Saturday, since Alexander and a bunch of people are going karaoke and I would like to go, but I won't if I haven't finished my fic by then.

    5. I have new chapters of Hourou Musuko and D.Gray-man to read! Also Reborn, but I'm not as excited about that. (Plus I had all sorts of good stuff to read earlier. I love that four out of five of the Jump series I'm transling are ones I follow anyway.)

    'sup internets?

I've had a couple of bad days, topped off by the car (the old one, not the newer one) not starting this afternoon.

We're kind of rushing around frantically to get ready for our trip. We'll be gone from the 20th through the 1st, so I'm trying to get enough laundry done so we have clothes. It's complicated by that fact that we're going places that are much colder than Sacramento, so that part's fun.

    Scanlation thoughts
    1. I have been reading a ton of Mizusawa Megumi and noticed that according to Baka Updates her stuff really hasn't been scanlated. So I'm saving what I've read (if I read it as scans; one of the one-shots I read was something I bought and can't find already scanned online) to add to my list of stuff to do. It should be easy, unstressful stuff. The content is simple and there's not a lot of editing to be done, just drop the dialogue/narration in for the most part.

    2. I downloaded the newest chapter of Hourou Musuko and each time I read it, I really feel like I want to start translating it. The translations that are currently being done are horrible. Not only are they awkwardly-worded, but there are multiple instances per chapter where they are flat-out wrong, many times saying the opposite of what was meant. This makes me so sad.

It kind of bothers me to pick up a series in the middle, yet I have done so for stuff I'm translating for other people, so...maybe I will. Again, it would be a very simple one, not a lot of work for me.

    3. Which brings me to my third point. I think I am going to have to drop Saint Young Men. I have translated chapter 7 and just need to do the editing, and there's just one more chapter in vol. 1. So I think what I will do is finish up vol. 1 and then just call it a day.

There are several reasons. The main one is that there is just so much background stuff to be edited in every chapter that I get really, really avoidant over it. I know I could do a tiny bit each day and it would actually get done, and yet I don't because it seems so huge. There are also a lot of puns and stuff that make translating more difficult, though the editing is definitely the main problem. But also...it's on volume 4 now and it should have ended long ago. It's just not that funny to me anymore and just seems like it's stretching the joke out too long. So part of my avoidance is tied to the fact that it's something that I don't really enjoy anymore, but will keep going for who knows how long.

I would love to be able to work on other stuff. Not just the new stuff mentioned above, of course, but also Yasha and A Child's Child, both of which are relatively easy in terms of both content and editing, and I enjoy doing. I don't enjoy SYM anymore, yet I feel obligated to do it, and so I can't work on those when I haven't worked on SYM in so long, etc. etc.

So yeah. I'm sorry to everyone who's enjoyed it and encouraged me to keep going. I know this will let people down and so I hate to do it, but maybe someone else will pick it up (and who knows, maybe it will even get a professional release).

    1. I just realised that all the shows I watch (the hour-long ones anyway) are on hiatus until January! Yes, this is a happy thing for me, since it means I'm not constantly swamped with new TV. I still need to watch a bunch of Ugly Betty. I did finally drop Glee, though. I had four eps backed up and was just like, do I really want to spend my energy on this?

You know, I suspect this won't matter...
God, I am SO tired of watching LJ do STUPID STUPID stuff and having people in fandom just shrug and go on with business as usual because, as someone recently said: "LJ's where the conversation is."

Right now a bunch of us are pretty pissed off that LJ's gone from three gender options (female, male and unspecified) to two. And if you guessed that those two are "female" and "male" give yourself a pat on the back. You know why they're doing it, don't you? So they can do a better job targeting ads.

Read all of Syne's post, too. You can't just get out of this by choosing one option or the other--specifying one of two genders will be mandatory on account creation.

And if you don't get that this is offensive, then really, I've got nothing to say to you. Fortunately, both [livejournal.com profile] rm in a post here and [personal profile] thingswithwings in a post here do have things to say.

I'm sure this will mean a few more people come over to DW or even IJ, but for the most part, fandom won't care. I'd love to be wrong, but each time LJ does something stupid, fandom's just shrugged and kept the conversation where it is. I don't know what it is and God I wish I did so I could figure out what to say to get people to realize that things like this hurt people.

We could host the conversation here on DW, if, you know, fandom gave a damn.

ETA: Supposedly this was a mistake although LJ's response sounds a little like backpedaling. See the ETA on this post and the question in the comment I linked to.

    Stoves and Emails and TV...
    1. Stove is here. we're going to need to fiddle with the temp calibration - first stop is to get a new oven gauge as the old one is fluctuating.

    2. amusement fact of the day: people who send you messages via LJ inbox but set their privacy settings so you cannot reply via the same. And then are vague in their requests. Making it harder = no response - not given what is happening around Casa De Morgan Dawn these past few months.

    3. we got caught up on both Glee and Dexter. I like Glee for the music. As for Dexter - wow. Any word if it has been renewed for next year?

To still catch up: Fringe, Flash Forward, Dollhouse (we've missed all of season 2), Big Bang Season 2.
